I would like to use this on sites that are inside my firewall. This would require a push.

I would suggest a last seen counter to make sure the push is still happening. This way if cron isn't running you will know it.

Thanks for your suggestion. This is something we are definitely working on, but don't yet have an ETA. I will add this to the feature request list and update this when it's ready.

I'm pleased to report push is done and live! Check out the 4.x dev branch for D6 and D7. 4.x is still in development, but I have it running in production on a high traffic Drupal site so (as of today) it's a stable branch. I can't promise it will stay stable, but for now, this is good to go. We should have an official release soon.
