Help & feedback
Drupal Commons 3.x Interactive Prototype is out - Feedback Requested!
Call for Sprinters - help accelerate the update of Commons to Drupal 7 with in-person and virtual/online sprints!
You can work on an issue in another project (show some Commons love!) or you can provide feedback and help with development of the Commons 7.x-3.x version via following open issues:
- Architecture: discussing the architecture
- Design: designing the interfaces
- Migration: taking care of upgrade path
Other open 7.x Commons issues.
Feedback is also needed in:
Roadmap
I would estimate that we'll have the first Commons 3.x (Drupal 7) betas in early July 2012. (source)
From the ezra-g's post Commons D7 MVP User stories @ g.d.o:
- Design/wireframing of key site areas (such as landing pages)
- Public discussion of Drupal architectural approaches to implementing that functionality
- A boat load of development
Some broad goals
From the ezra-g's post Commons D7 MVP User stories @ g.d.o:
- Provide a range of easy-to-use collaboration tools to help people organically share ideas and solutions
- Provide community managers with the tools they need to measure and support the community and fight spam
- Out-of-the-box usability on a range of devices (aka mobile support) (Desktop, phone, tablet)
- Providing a website that’s easy to set up for non developers and follows Drupal best practices
- As much as possible, have the technical components separate enough to be a flexible accelerator for site building
Miscellaneous
Original report by dotman
I didn't see a D7 version at acquia. is there a beta or dev version available, and if so where? If not, is there a planned release date?
thanks.

juan_g CreditAttribution: juan_g commentedThe module table is now in the new wiki Drupal 7 porting status of Commons modules, at the Commons group.
juan_g CreditAttribution: juan_g commentedWith about 85% of the Commons contrib modules ported to D7, even when they are in different stages of development (dev, alpha, beta, rc, stable, in core), it looks like a D7 release with most of the features could be feasible soon. As I suggested in the new porting status table:
What do the Commons team think about initial D7 releases like these? They would be really useful for new sites. And, to consider upgrading old sites, of course there should be a short list with the features not yet available in the D7 version.

Renee S CreditAttribution: Renee S commentedI'm definitely excited about this possibility, and would love to throw myself and perhaps even some development resources wholeheartedly into alpha- and beta-testing available profiles. 85% functionality is a great place to start IMO...

unleash CreditAttribution: unleash commentedwell the project gains speed and i guess that we are heading
the first major steps towards accomplishing the needed tasks
Note: There are hundreds and thousands of Drupalers and Commons-users are waiting at the fences. The Drupal-Commons-project has got many many friends all over the planet.
The sustainable development is a great thing. BTW Guess that the DrupalCon at DENVER some boost of /in development can be expected.... What do you think!?

js CreditAttribution: js commentedI would like to see a D7 version released immediately using whatever is working currently.
I could use it in any state, benefit from releases when they happen along, but still be able to do my extended customizations working in D7.
I have already developed code around Feeds and OpenCalais in D7 and moving it back to D6 was painful because those applications have changed, plus all the DB queries all needed to be updated. The same would be true for someone starting with D6 now and then having to move custom code to D7, or having to use modules that have an end of life in D6, or not be able to use functionality that has been developed beginning in D7.
I understand how complex Commons integration with some code has become, but D7 is now well over a year old, with lots and lots of mature modules specific to it. Themes as well.
Anyone looking to extend Drupal and Commons is in a tough spot currently, and an early release of a crippled D7 version would make all the difference.

mariomaric CreditAttribution: mariomaric commentedAlthough I personally would like that Commons driven by Drupal 7 was released like yesterday, I'm not in favor of rushing - I would like to have planing and testing phase were Acquia can iron things out with help / feedback from community.
On a side note, I just watched LukeW keynote @ DrupalCon - I'm super excited to try to mock-up some ideas about Commons 7 user interface from the point of mobile first approach - especially regarding to mentioned constraints that lead to focus. :)
ay13 CreditAttribution: ay13 commentedWe are definitely using a mobile first approach so you can rest assured about that. I was in a few sessions at DrupalCon were the discussions led towards a mobile sized admin system, if you can crack how to fit create content, edit content and config pages into a mobile first idea that would be awesome. Bonus points if anyone can crack the permissions page, tables do not like to be scaled down, especially the monster that is permissions page.

js CreditAttribution: js commented@mariomaric I don't agree that releasing an early dev is rushing it. It is simply a dev release, and as such, anyone using it is assuming some risk or effort in upgrading, including at the DB level.
This allows other development on the same platform, which is important currently since the differences between 6 and 7 are significant, plus many contributed modules are completely different.

escapesequence CreditAttribution: escapesequence commentedLike js, I am one of those who would like to see a workable 7.x ASAP.
Before describing my thoughts, let me say that I appreciate the efforts of Acquia and the Commons team.
Couldn't a 7.x-1.x-alpha version be done very quickly using 7.x modules and altering Commons-6.x as necessary? (or am I under-estimating the work involved?)
It seems that a 7.x-1.x-alpha1 could become 7.x-1.x-beta1 in a few months (helpful for those who are not willing to spend the time/effort required by an alpha).
Couldn't work on 7.x-2.x be done in parallel so that a 7.x-2.x-alpha1 is ready about the same time as 7.x-1.x-beta1?
Benefits of 7.x-1.x-beta is: 1) gets a developer-ready version out there for those that are looking for a 7.x solution; 2) provides a upgrade "stepping stone" ==> 6.x-2.x -> 7.x-1.x -> 7.x-2.x
============
The 7.x-3.x-dev tag plus the effort to describe a Minimum Viable Product, indicates to me that the decision has already been made to start fresh development. I think the concern of many is that new development will delay a workable 7.x version. Any chance for a roadmap? That could allay concerns or at least help in planning.

mariomaric CreditAttribution: mariomaric commentedHm..yes, I understand the urge of having Commons @ Drupal 7..I'm not in that position because I had no choice - I needed community web site here and now, so I built it on Commons 2.5
BUT, maybe if Acquia will provide full upgrade path (via Migrate module) than you could build your sites @ Commons 6? Don't know...
escapesequence CreditAttribution: escapesequence commentedPS I like the idea of a D7 that allows for contributed apps from the community. Maybe building the core of such a system would not take very long - but I haven't seen any discussion of that.
david.moore.ipg CreditAttribution: david.moore.ipg commentedBy apps, do we really mean features in Duraplese? In addition to waiting for commons core modules to be updated to 7 (or assisting in that process), the commons features need to be updated. I think expanding a set of optional features (disabled by default) for the commons platform would be nice. However, I am a little worried about how fragmented commons already is through its features. For example, many for the features revolve around content types so we end up with a bunch of different views and tabs and contexts and such tied to content types. The activity stream and content types fight each other and aren't really integrated like I would want them to be. From the little I know of Drupal 7, some of that could be fixed by its architecture where every content type is not necessarily a node. Just hoping.

mariomaric CreditAttribution: mariomaric commentedWhen I talk about Apps, I talk about Open App Standard and Apps module:
Even in Commons 6.x-2.x you can develop your own features..but IMHO Apps approach is more complete (holistic?).
Hm..I think that maybe we should close this issue (or transform it to the [meta] one), now that we have 7.x-3.x-dev tag / version, and create separate issues according to progress with Commons @ Drupal 7 that hopefully will be announced at http://groups.drupal.org/commons

I know that all you busy guys who work on the new version want to have a patience community.
I do not want to be unpatience - but i have to tell you that i love the idea of ironing out the last steps to get Commons to a go!!!
Hmm - MarioMaric ,you muse about the progess:
well from my point of view - Drupal-Commons has got lots of friends. They admire the sustainable development- i guess that we can have a very very brigth future... And yes: i really look forward

mariomaric CreditAttribution: mariomaric commentedTL;DR - issue summary updated - look above. For the whole story - see below. :)
Update to the Captain's log, Stardate -311445.04.
It's been awhile since the last update.
Our Captain Ezra Barnett Gildesgame announced new mission aimed to accelerate building of the new Panels class starship: USS Commons (NCC-7X3X) and to boldly code what no one has coded before.
New mission? Well, there are many great outposts which will hold camps (over the next few months) where all living forms from our Galactic quadrant should definitely come by, join forces and help us with various architecture, design, migration and other very precious/related issues.
In the recent call from the Earth, we received good news from the Starfleet Acquiademy. Starfleet most brightest minds, guided by vice admiral Lisa Rex, are working on finishing first round of designs for the new starship which will be posted for public review and feedback in the next week or two. For those of you who would like to get a sneak peak, it would be best to closely watch announcements at Commonsphere.
We also found out that admiral Moshe Weitzman (former captain of the glorious USS Cyrve) is cautiously planning migration routes - it would be huge disaster to loose all the galactic maps and other valuable data from our current Context class starship: USS Commons (NCC-6X27).
At the end, I wouldn't be able to wrote this report if there wasn't our security chief officer Greg Knaddison who is making sure that we are protected and safe from cross-galactic and wormhole injection attacks of hostile species.
Live long and prosper, yours truly self-proclaimed community officer,

I'm not sure about this Greg Knaddison bloke, he knows too much, stick him in the brig.

FunkMonkey CreditAttribution: FunkMonkey commentedOkay, I'll be the PITA. How are things going with the migration to D7? Getting close to a beta release? Tis only the continued survival of the federation at stake.
I have checked the Commons Group but it appears to be mostly filled with job spam.
Thanks for all the hard work on this!
