It seems that the value of the alternate login disappears from the database under some, yet undetermined, circumstance.

I have this problem as well.
I do think it happends when a user or admin open up the user side and save the side again. The field for Alternate Login: is not always filled up from the database. And when you save or even only close the user page the databases will be updated an the alt-login table will be updated with nothing.

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one to have this problem. Very cumbersome as my users only use their alternate login to login, and I get many 'lost password' complaints.
I added some watchdog flags in order to try to learn more about this issue.
I agree with jonny, if the alt login is not correctly loaded, it won't be saved, but I disagree with the second point, if the user page is closed, no update is made in the db.

pretty sure the latest 5.x release solves this issue. please upgrade and test :)
