Is there a way to change the default PDF settings to LETTER size paper with 1-inch margins, 2-column output? I don't mind editing tcpdf.php or some other file if that is the right thing to do, but I am not about to mess about in there blindly.
I appreciate any help.

You can either edit the constants in the tcpdf_config.php file inside tcpdf/config or override the theme_pdfview_pdf function in your theme

gah, sorry ... "active (needs more info)" gets filtered out of the main list. switching to "active"
