I notice, however, that the google language api family is now deprecated..which is, I assume, why this module is no longer working for me.

has anyone come up with an alternative translation source for this module?

Hi Dub, After reading the announcement from Google I was just too bummed to update the project page, but I just went ahead and marked it obsolete. I hope they bring back the service in the future, and I'll be happy to look at alternatives in the meantime.
