Well we have been looking to start a video posting/commenting website and we came across Drupal. So we looked around and found broadbandsports.com which is almost exactly what we had in mind to create. We also read or heard that broadbandsports was highly modified which put out our fires a little bit since we are not php guys at all. But our question is could someone new to drupal and php make a site such as broadbandsports.com? We are tech guys just have never done anything with php.

If not we were looking into others as such as clip-share and other pay scripts to do this.

Thanks

If you consider yourselves "tech guys" then PHP should be no problem for you. Drupal is a fine piece of software that is well organized.

tdellaringa, By tech i mean we understand internet things, but not php. :D I understand drupal is a fine software and well organized. But we are asking if its possible to modify drupal X to get broadbandsports.com for non php people? Or is it to much for a beginner?

There doesn't seem to be anything overly special about broadbandsports.com that you can't pull off in Drupal.
can it be done without manipulating any php at all, probably not.
Most of what's modified about that site is the theme and the front page from my short visit.

My best advice is give it a go. Fact is even with a propreitary package, you will have to learn to manipulate it to do exactly what you want. Which then makes it no different than Drupal as far as learning curves are concerned.

Well I think you would be very happy sticking with drupal. Drupal is amazingly powerful and well supported. I've used other solutions and have not been pleased. I think that I am like many others, I found drupal but I just didn't know if it was right. It didn't look as pretty out of the box, it seem difficult at first, and other obstacles and issues seemed to draw me towards other solutions. But like many others I have come back to drupal. Now you couldn't sell me another cms. I can look at just about any site and come up with a way that I could easily accomplish the same effect with drupal. Now that I have used drupal for a while It seems very easy, though I don't always have the answer or the knowledge, drupal is fortunate enough to have a very active forum and IRC channel to help you along. Drew, if you are looking for a CMS, I would really give you my recommendation for drupal.

Did you figure out how to do something? Did you find documentation on Drupal.org inadequate? Well now it's your turn. Document your Success!

As someone who has been at the startline with a website idea for two years, not technical at all and very limited programming skills in any language, and who came accross drupal about a year ago. I´d recomend just starting the site on a apache localhost with drupal and not worry about php at all. See how far you get building the site you´d like by just changing the settings and playing with templates and modules. Tip, don´t worry overly much if Handbook instructions are describing something that is a older version than 5.0, (or whatever version you choose to use) you can figure it out, but do be careful not mixing module/templates from different versions though.

If you are more than just a couple of guy´s it would not be overly expensive to chip in and have someone who knows both drupal, php, mysql, xhtml and css do any modifications you´d like. I don´t want to recommend any one who specialices in this but I came accross a company in Sweden that offered deluxe service in this area for as low/high as: 500/5000 euros, just over 650/6500 dollar, 330/3300 pounds. But thats real pro´s, living in an expensive country who would build your site from scrach, design it, seo optimize it, customize the fonts, design the logo, select the graphics etc. etc.

Clever people like you guys should be able to do many of those yourself. Knowing drupal, php, xhtml and css are valuable knowledge as you can see from prices above, but if you´re in a hurry and have cash this is worth consideration. Try fre-elance sites where you can rent coders to do projects for you big and small, search for "drupal customization" or similar for prices way, way lower than those mentioned above.

Another tip, I´ve posted quite a few newbie questions like this. The post installation forum is neither friendly nor unfriendly, just busy since all post-installation questions are asked in one channel. This is more of a developer oriented cms and less of a user oriented cms than f.eks. joomla or wordpress (but better i.m.o.,that´s why I'm still around), point is, don´t expect answers to very specific questions, you´d have better luck with google site: search on forums and handbooks directories.

I'm a recent convert to Drupal - I come from a purely xhtml background and like you I previously had no experience with php at all. I've been looking at Drupal seriously for about five or six weeks now. What I've learnt in that time meant that I could put together a site like broadbandsports.com without any difficulty (admittedly I only had a fairly brief look at the site).

I'd definitely say build a few practice sites while you learn Drupal, but I don't see any reason that you can't achieve what you're after without too much effort.

I hope this helps with your decision, and best of luck with the site :)

wow, great responses!

I guess we will just dive in a see what happens. All of you sound like the people we needed to hear from.

I'm sure we'll post here for more help in the next few days or so. :D

Thanks again
