I'm asking since I want to create a content type and have that type viewable to users in a certain role. I use CCK for all my content types so basically, I was thinking I could create a new type and set the 'view' permission to the role I wanted and be done with it.

Is there something I'm missing?

It seems like developers should have the freedom to utilize the hooks for user created node types.

Using Drupal 5.1.

It's very hacked, but I think adding a conditional to the theme for that node based on the role might be my only option.

I'm a little surprised that this has received no comments.

If you're still looking for the answer, try the Content Access module:
