I have an older drupal installation and I am wondering about the best way to update it to the lates stable version... Is there an FAQ? I have spent some time searching the site but am still at a loss on how to do it.

Pretty much the same as always
Some steps here
http://drupal.org/node/75047
TEST FIRST ON GOOD BACKUP
Set to default theme (Blue Marine)
Upgrade to each major release version. 4.5 -> 4.6 -> 4.7 -> 5.1
test each contrib module at each step. Check that stuff works and there is an upgrade path.
Core has an upgrade path.
Watch the 4.7 -> 5.0 upgrade video for the basic stuff.
