I'm making a site for a school and would like to allow user roles to automatically change by default
Is there a module or other way to simply change a user role at a certain date, for example? (so a student would become an alumni member by default within, say, 4 years)

Users changing role themselves
Yes, me too.
I'm working on a site where I'm hoping to allow users to change their role themselves without the need for admin intervention. You'd obviously have to be able to restrict which roles they could choose so that the admin role was excluded.
The nearest I've found is the Role Signup module which might have to do for now. It allows users to select their role when registering in the first place. Ideally they would also be able to change their role subsequently as well.
There's also an Account Types module which might possibly be configured to do this.
