This module was entirely rewrote. It now depends on other modules to give grants to a node since this new version just propagates the grants to the node's descendants. Works with Drupal 6.

Tagged for Drupal 5, finally. Why is it the only instructions that worked for me were year-old ones from my own site?

Fixed install file - see http://drupal.org/node/151496 - plus code cleanup, moved form_alter tweaks to a separate module.
