Is there a way to ensure that new members are subscribed to newsletters by default, ie opt out instead of opt in?

You could add authenticated users when doing edit newsletter. Just updated the code, should be repackaged in a couple hours. Please try and report back here if it works/doesn't changing issue to active/fixed!
