Hi,
I am looking for a web host to host my drupal community site which I expect to gain popularity in 1-3yrs time :)
So I intend to understand my hosting requirements and find a web host which provides a minimum level of managed hosting and offers scalability and upgrade options.

I need a web host which can provide the following:

  • VPS hosting with atleast 1-2GB RAM, 10-50GB hard disk
  • high bandwidth (200GB to 1TB), with option to upgrade package later
  • managed setup of drupal commons pressflow configured with VARNISH, PHP APC, Memcached
  • CDN, Cloud feature (optional) to handled traffic peaks and make it scalable
  • Apache Solr (optional)

I have checked out some web hosts as listed below,

Since I am starting with a new site I intend to start with basic VPS solution, and upgrade as my site grows.

Can anyone confirm whether my understanding on hosting requirements are correct or not?
And also could anyone suggest web host to suit my use-case? Your suggestions are highly valuable for me!

I believe since July, when you first created this page, you have found safe landing place for your site. For a very small site a VPS starter is more than enough, you can extend that anytime to a larger VPS like VPS basic or VPS standard without extra setup costs - Also downgrading can be done without extra costs btw ;)
Although if you want the specifications you mentioned, you could take a VPS basic/standard immediately.

A VPS basic (24.95€/month) consists of:

  • 1 GB ram
  • 2 full cores
  • 20 GB disk space
  • 500 GB traffic/month
  • Automatic and manual VPS backup snapshots

We ask a small setup fee if you want Drupal pre-installed, however for that fee we will also make manual optimizations to all server software settings for optimal performance. If you would prefer a completely managed VPS, you can order advanced support as well as an option. With that we'll also include monitoring and further updates/optimizations while your server is running with us.

Unless your site is huge, I don't think you'll benefit from memcached. We tried it ourselves, but it was a little slower than without it. Memcached is more useful on very large sites with huge amounts of traffic. The memcached is typically installed on a second (or more) server.

Well you can always test a VPS for 2 weeks for free, but that does of course does not include manual interventions like setup/configurations.
