I run an internal company website. They want a screen in the break room that shows the upcoming events as a constantly-running slideshow. How can I do this? I tried "showcase." but couldn't get it working, and would need a lot of manipulation to adapt it to my needs.

How do I write a basic PHP page that accesses the content of nodes belonging to certain categories?

I havent looked into it (yet), but maybe the s5 module would work?

s5 is basically what you want, and with the category module's book compatibility layer and a cck type for the events you could have displays both as a slide show and as a calendar view (using the Calendar module for views).
