From a View with a Panels Pane display, I choose [From context] for the argument input in the Pane Settings.

The list of elements provided appears to display the structural part of the element, but not the detail. Eg, there is a stack of selection options for:

File URL

File URL

It looks like something is weird with the tokens from token.module. Can you describe more about your setup? Do you have a lot of different file fields, maybe?

Thanks for having a look...it's one of those really disempowering "small" problems.

This site was built originally by another contractor, so I'm often stumbling across some mysterious half buried cruft.

There are lots of fields, yes: over 80
Of those, 11 are file fields

What else might be useful to know?

I see you've shifted the issue to 7x ... just to clarify, I'm running D6.22 on an older PHP (5.1.6), which is apparently due to some problems at the University with running higher versions of PHP on their RHEL install.

Perhaps this is CTools having a sulk after being asked to run on old PHP gear?
