I'm currently working on a "Using Google calendar with community projects" document, and webchick suggested it belongs as a handbook page somewhere in the Getting involved guide. We've also talked about identifying ways that PMs can get involved in community work as well as best practices for folks who find themselves as project organizers.
Looking at the Getting Involved tab, it seems like such a section might belong as a sub-set of the Projects header, but clicking that link leads to Community initiatives, and it doesn't seem right there.
Thoughts about where something like this belongs?

lisarex commentedAs in, how PMs can help on *.d.o. projects ? Or theming, translation and other areas as well?
I started w/ some ideas at #1010262-5: Identify interest areas for getting involved landing page.
The projects terminology on the sidebar will be changed (issue somewhere). I do think the IA of the Getting Involved Guide could use some work. (see book outline -admin only: http://drupal.org/admin/content/book/281873)
As long as people are confident that clicking a link will lead them to the right answer, we could organize this book into fewer 2nd level pages... There's a lot of "How to" nodes in here, as well "This needs work" .
Not sure where a 'Contribute to project management' yet could fit in but I agree, it's worthwhile to fit it in somehow. Ongoing community projects don't always advertise they need a PM....

eliza411 commentedI'm not really sure what the section might grow to encompass.
I posted a draft of the page that prompted me to open this issue to the g.d.o. Project management group for content feedback ... it will be marked up and more finely honed for when we find it a home. :)

Maybe getting some of the content visible would help define what such a section would become.

heather commentedThis is more of a big picture comment... and not sure if this is the right place. But - This is an awesome idea! I was struggling w project management myself and ended up in a miasma of misdirected effort.
I think some of this is totally obvious to some people, but we could make it more clear: How you can be an effective project manager, as well- what community initiatives need project management (if that is your skill).
I wanted to share that I spoke w both Leisa and Webchick about this.
Webchick pointed me to http://drupal.org/node/1006562 - which is specifically about drupal.org initiatives. I needed more advice on cat herding. How were effective initiatives organized?
This is what Leisa said to me "Roadmap > project, project, project > Task, task task" but she did it with her hands, so this I made as a visual: https://skitch.com/heatherjames/f2fdd/roadmap
Uploaded with Skitch!
Then, people can see clearly: OH! I know what I can do!

Closing this issue (referenced there now) as a duplicate.
