(This may already be a known issue, but I could find it anywhere).

When I preview a new blog post it is counted as a "page view" by the statistics module, so when the blog is finally published, it may show that it has already been read several times. For example, on one recent post I was experimenting and previewing different versions before publishing it--when I finally had a format I was satifisfied with I pressed "submit" and the post already said "23 reads".

You are right on both counts (no pun intended :-) This is an issue, and it is also a known one. Well, maybe you were actually the first to post about it, but the one which I just posted the fix for is: http://drupal.org/node/12372
