Site/Menu Site map don't seem to work

Hello all,
I'm a complete novice to drupal . I'm running Drupal 6.19 and have installed both the site map module and the menu site map modules. I've configured them to the umpteenth degree in every way I could but the site map doesn't show on the bottom of my web pages. I didn't think creating a site map would be so complicated but evidently it is. I've searched the archives for days and cannot figure out what I'm doing wrong. Could someone please help me with this? Thanks for your consideration!
