I created a user role called content producer and gave it the permission to use administration theme. It works for a custom path "dashboard" which I added, but it doesn't seem to activate when editing content. For uid1 it activates. When I add node/*/edit to the custom paths, then it works for the content producer role also.

Same here. Only uid=1 gets the admin theme, unless I add admin/* and node/*/edit to the custom paths - then it works for other users who have a suitable role/permission.
