When I browse through all the Drupal themes, they always have their news/blog items under each other.
Does this mean you can't for example make a theme that has columns? Like in the first row 2 columns, in the second row 3 columns, and under that the normal blog items under each other?

You can do anything you want to with a custom theme.

take twenty minutes and just browse:
http://www.drupalsites.net/categories/magazine (drupal sites in the magazine category)
or the media cat: http://www.drupalsites.net/categories/media

my favorite is the onion, but realize its not a serious thing, but they have done the same layout as the printed rag: http://www.theonion.com/content/ and they are serious about it!

I am also trying to set up a news site and I decided to settle for the Channel Nine theme. It has 4 columns, but it has a few glitches. One was that it misses a line of code which makes it impossible for some modules to load. If you search the fora for Channel Nine, eventually in connection with my name you'll quickly find them.
