Proposed changes that are near consensus:
* replace link to all d.o. projects with a link to the About Drupal.org page (this issue)
* Add a 'Need Help?' link that goes to the support page (see #314325-32: Redesign the support page
* Replace DrupalCon links with a single link to drupal.org/drupalcon (#1091454: Update d.o. footer to include generic DrupalCon link)
Original:
*In the About section, the Drupal.org link goes to a search of Drupal.org projects. This is not what people are expecting. Instead I would like to link to the Drupal.org FAQ (http://drupal.org/node/179723)
* Add a Help link. This will link to a cleaned up version of http://drupal.org/support, which will attempt to point people in the right direction, and will include a link to file an issue if there's a problem with content or spam.
It probably makes sense to add this under Community and Support
If there's no objection, I'll create a patch

lisarex commentedSee also #1164650: Consider renaming Drupal.org FAQ book to About Drupal.org?... I think renaming would be good.
drummWorks for me. Just watch out for adding too much to the footer in general.

joachim commented> In the About section, the Drupal.org link goes to a search of Drupal.org projects.
We still need a good way to get to Drupal.org projects -- the FAQ should either provide this as a list or a link.
lisarex commentedThanks joachim.
I've updated http://drupal.org/about-drupal.org now with a lot more overview/details.
Also, how's this for the footer?
joachim commentedThe new page looks good.
Though I still don't think http://drupal.org/project/drupal.org%20projects?filters=bs_project_sandb... is a good page to link to for finding d.org-related projects.
There's no clear order, and there's cruft -- eg, what is Commerce SecurePay doing in there? Or Maintenance theme? Why is Test driven development infrastructure the first relevant project listed?
When people have a problem with drupal.org, or even want to get stuck in a post a patch, we need to make it simple to find out where to do that -- or they just give up and are frustrated with their experience on the site.
lisarex commentedCruft is getting cleaned out per #1239994: Change category for 'drupal.org project' sandboxes that shouldn't have it and relabeling will happen soon too, to reduce this problem.
I've updated the summary with the 3 proposed changes to the footer that are out there (there are a few others, but don't yet have consensus yet, like #1133998: Replace "Druplicon" menu item in the footer with a link to the new Drupal logo and media kit page.
Updated screenshot with the three changes (will post a patch when I'm not running out the door
Comment #7
lisarex commentedPatch that takes care of these footer fixes:
1) #1091454: Update d.o. footer to include generic DrupalCon link
2) #1242094: Restore "Support" in header navigation
As well as the About link mentioned in comment 1.
If nobody else can commit it within the next couple days (and there's no problems found), I'll commit it.
drummLooks good, committed.

drummDeployed during http://london2011.drupal.org/coreconversation/developing-and-site-buildi...
lisarex commentedDeploying during a session! That's badass! Love it.

juan_g commentedThanks for this footer fix, including for example a useful link to drupal.org/support. Because of this fix, I've just updated (from "header and footer" to just "header") the related issue #1242094: Restore "Support" in header navigation.

joachim commentedFollow-on issue: now the about footer link goes to a page, how does one find the d.org projects? #1323590: can't get to drupal.org projects
