When a group by field is chosen, for instance in a table layout, all the formatting for that field is discarded. None of the rewrite or style settings are kept.
It would be most useful for these setting to be kept so that the group by field could for instance be a link.

You are right, this part of views is not really flexible.

But there is already another issue which will provide it, if someone is doing it: #418546: Sort grouped fields by more than one level (2 fields - one after the other)
