Similar issue in 6.x. Tested with both the latest dev and an older version (which used to work) so perhaps chrome updated in a way that broke this functionality?

i have the same problem with 6.x. It works in firefox 6.0.1, but not at all in chrome. And its not possible to upload image also in IE9

Works with Explorer 8, but not Chrome (version 16.0.912.63 m).

Same issue with Chrome, caused by conflict with jQuery Update 6.x-2.0-alpha1 module.
