Submodule for generic Entities support?

Are there any plans to add generic support for entities? Possibly merging some of the ref_field codebase or just going solo? The simple reason is that Relations promises to be a much more complicated module than most uses need and will include a huge amount of overhead for something that can otherwise be very simple.
