No payment, just award without gateway

I have a customer who does not charge at the time of checkout because of the nature of shipping charge variables and medical supplies thus, they do not use a payment gateway. They would like to award their customers points for purchases but for this module to work it must have the payment module enabled and without a gateway checkout cannot be completed. Is there a way around this or have I missed anything or am I going about this in the wrong way. Thanks in advance for any help.
