i was looking for this functionality in 4.7, so i made this patch, which seems to work fine for me. maybe someone else will find this useful. attaching the whole (56 lines small) module, because 5.x might change, 4.7 probably wont.

i took the liberty to commit this to the DRUPAL-4-7 branch which i created. also created a DRUPAL-5 branch for the current HEAD version. hope you don't mind. if you have some spare time, you could create releases for both branches.
