As mentioned in the issue posted at http://drupal.org/node/1249210#comment-4868160, it might be a helpful in some instances to show hierarchies as expanded as opposed to having to drill down to expose the lower levels. There could be an option in the "links" widget to show hierarchies as expanded by default.
