Webform requires at least version 6.16 of Drupal core. (Currently    [error]
using Webform 6.14)

Surely it means 'Drupal core 6.14'?

I am on the very latest from git branch 7.x-4.x, but I have *no idea* what that translates to in the version dropdown above :/

Can you post your webform.info file contents? I don't see any requirement there.

you can run `drush status` or `drush version` to get your drush version number

This message is logged by update_check_requirements() that is a core function that we did copy verbatim to drush.
