I would very much like to use this module in D7. Is there a plan to develop a D7 version of this module?

Or is there a way to autocreate groups and make them private in D7 with any other module?

Solved with Organic Groups 7.x-2.0-beta1.

In Drupal 7 you can use a combination of OG, Rules and Tokens to autocreate a group upon account creation using the account name as the group name. Just create a private group before you set up the rules to autocreate the group. When creating the private group you can set it up so that only the group owner can add people to that group.

Now all you have to do is to create exclusive OG nodes that can only be posted in groups and your are set.
