It's beginning to look like the original developer isn't updating this module, and issues aren't being addressed in a timely manner. However, you can create the button code and copy/past to any page or article, or in my case - a footer block.

The curent version is stable for most and work is always underway.

You're right, the general sharing button code is one alternative for those having issues with the module that haven't yet pinpointed a specific cause.
