Steps:
1. Create node by clicking "Add Gallery" from group menu
2. Add images normally and save
3. When displayed, OG group is preserved
4. Edit that node, save changes - and OG group association is lost

And if you disable galleryformatter this problem disappears?

Thanks Manuel - yes, it does (i.e. OG status *is* preserved when GF disabled)l.
