Issue Summary
It sure would be nice if this could be done a little less manually.

Now that I've updated the module for 5.x, I can start on this.

This is pretty much done as of the latest commits to the trunk I made today. Configuration is done directly from the term create/edit pages, which isn't necessarily the best idea, but it was easy. This can always be changed later.
