in my status report, the last line says the following:

Unable to determine your web server type and version. Drupal might not work properly. "

what do i need to do? thank you.

I have the same issue on my host, Apollo Hosting, but it doesn't indicate any problems. It likely means that the system info that Drupal is trying to read is not accessible becauase you're on a shared host.

This message in itself doesn't cause any problems.

it means just what is says:
"Unable to determine your web server type and version."

your webserver might hide what version it is or even the servername itself, like explained here

you could change your webserver to expose more information, but really it doenst matter as long as *you* know that you use a supported webserver (e.g. apache 2.x)
