I read that the module is limited to alphanumeric characters. An option to add a period instead of a space would be nice.

An option to select a custom character might be useful.

A period is allowed, we would need a list of what other characters might be allowed and useful for usernames.

Nobody has provided a a list of what other characters might be allowed and useful for usernames. No activity for nearly eight years. There is no patch. People who wants a period in usernames can just create a username field contaning a period. Closing as "won't fix".
