Views has the ability to sort, filter, and paginate data on the back end.
The jQuery Datatables plugin supports ajax callbacks for all of these operations on the frontend.

When might we be able to expect Datatables to integrate the two features?

yeah this is really a big disadvantage! If we could get this feature work we get really an absolutely awesome module. i would say this replaces the standart table if we can make this happen somehow.
