This is a special case, but while I was carrying out an update (running cron from the status page) my internet connection died. This is what was returned:

Drupal core update status	Update status is unavailable. cron may need to be run.
Module update status	Update status is unavailable. cron may need to be run.

This is perfect, but the icons was a tick and the garland background colour was set to green. Shouldn't this be classified as a warning instead?

It's really difficult to tell; your site may have nothing that might be updatable at this point, so it's a little difficult to make that a warning. It's not impossible, mind. Will have to think on it.
