I am looking for a low cost but reliable shared hosting plan. I have narrowed it down to between Hostgator and MDDhosting. Has anyone tried either of these web hosting company's shared server plans with Drupal 7, recently? Are they fast enough for a small website? Which one is faster? Does the admin side take forever?

Support is excellent. Mostly, very snappy. Occasional slow-downs. Be aware that they do backups every night when the majority of their customer base is not using the server, so if you're in a very different timezone and likely to be busiest when they are running backups, that could interfere.

But they are a top notch web host.

I'd go for them over HG, because (i) I've used them, so feel qualified to make the recommendation, and (ii) They don't offer unlimited storage, which means all the limits on your account are up front and public. ("Unlimited" hosts have to impose limits on server resources, it's just harder to pin those limits down).

Both are great, and personally I would recommend Hostgator.

If you get a small site, you could go with Bluehost, which actually faster with lower price and "anytime money back guarantee". The only shortness of Bluehost is that they have stronger constraint on your usage of CPU, and Memory resource, once your site get very busy, your account might be suspended frequently. But for a small site, i think it won't bother you.

I'm looking for Drupal hosting so I've been doing some research. Those "Drupal hosting awards" that rated GreenGeeks #1 for 2012 must have missed or ignored this long page that starts in May 2010 and includes 2 replies by the CEO of GreenGeeks. Either not very good research or biased. No way will I consider using them or taking those awards seriously after reading all this:

Here's the best advice I've found regarding hosting awards and rankings:
Be aware that most "hosting ranking sites" are simply affiliate sites, and the companies at the top of the lists are often those that pay the most to the referrer. There is no objective, third party group such as Consumers Union that is actually testing and evaluating web hosts. The appearance of a name on one of those lists is probably a good reason to NOT host with them.

So many people hit the "top ten hosts" lists and assume the ranking is genuine. Whilst they are large hosts, and there are many satisfied customers, you are quite right - the ranking is all to do with the affiliate payout. Some of these hosts pay in excess of $100 per sign-up.

The Drupal Association has been working on a system for recommending hosts for Drupal. When I had the chance for some input into the process, I highlighted this fact and made the point that Drupal has the chance to rise above this. What's needed is transparency. There's nothing wrong with the DA benefiting from affiliate recommendations. But if that happens the extent to which Drupal is remunerated by a particular host needs to be transparently stated, so that people can see what's happened.

By far the most helpful resource I've found for researching web hosts is webhostingtalk.com. All reviews there are carefully scrutinised to make sure they are not shills, and bad reviews require the reviewer to provide some proof that they were a customer. Things can get quirky over there, and threads can get sidetracked, but it's the only site I trust to vet information to ensure it's impartial.

I went with MDDhosting and am very satisfied with their speed - both for users and on the administration pages.

Drupal installations are supported with most hosting providers. If your site is small and doesn't "eat" server resources, you can easily find a good hosting provider within your location. Check review sites such as WebHostingGeeks, Serchen, etc. while selecting a company.
