Hello, i'm novice, i have to do a web site, what is the best choice from drupal 5.1 or 4.7.x ?
what are the difference?

The only reason to use 4.7.x would be if you want to use a module that has not yet been ported to the 5.x series. Drupal 5.x has a lot of improvements over 4.7.x.

The only reason I can think of to go for 4.7 is if you need certain modules that are not yet ported to Drupal 5.

what type of improvements are there in 5.1 , i tend to keep myself to 4.7 as many modules are not available in 5.1 and i never know when i would be in need of module which is available in 4,7 and might not be in 5.1

just curious why 5.1 is better then 4.7

there are quite a few, the overhauled admin area, more granular permissions, new cacheing system, new css aggregation. the modules that haven't caught up to 5.1 may not even be needed. and the advancements of the 5.0 versions of modules too is of benefit in some cases.

There are also some modules for Drupal 5.x that aren't available for 4.7.

I would be careful with older modules:some of them will maybe never be upgraded, so it is probably better not to make yourself dependent of these.

I love 5.1 admin area. Easy to organize installed modules. But i am building a social network site now (i am newbie) and 5.1 don't have many modules i need for my project. :(

There are quite few social networking sites already built on Drupal ,,, team sugar for one have you joined the Social Networking Group ? http://groups.drupal.org/social-networking-sites

No. Not yet. At this stage i can only ask questions. But, to be frank, i don't find that group is active (no replies to newbies). Once i finished my site, i'll join that group and probably help other newbies. :)
