  1. What module are you trying to add?
  2. Does it have a .info file?
  3. Where did you put the module files? In sites/all/modules?
  4. Are you using the correct module version?

As for the way the module page is displaying, that looks normal. Do you have javascript enabled? If so, then you should be able to expand/collapse the module groupings (cck, optional, core required).

Just a few questions to get us started.
