I've noticed that no matter what theme I use my load time is essentially the same, give or take a few ms.

That is far too slow for my tastes and I am on a fast pipe. I upgraded to drupal 5.1 and the load time was better but a few modules didn't work right so I went back to drupal 4.7 through my backups.

Any ideas?
I am already using gzip compression which does help a bit.

I don't know where you're getting those figures, but when I browse your site, it takes about half a second to fetch and render pretty much any page from your site (I'm on a cable modem in the southeastern US). The first pageload took slightly longer because your graphics were not in my browser cache.

I went to your site, and I don't notice any aggravating delays. The first time, it took maybe 8 or 10 seconds to load, but the second time, with the pictures in cache, it loaded almost instantaneously. My feeling is that your site is ok, but that your own connection is not really the best.

yeah the first request was several seconds (under 10), but that's mainly the images. The figures you quoted sound a bit much for any site really.

With our site blockcache module helped a lot - but we use a lot of blocks.

Note that anonymous users get the full advantage of caching, but if you view your own site when logged in, it'll be doing 5x as much work checking permissions and building custom menus for you.

I know when I view it on my connection it takes about 10-12 seconds and after caching about 3 seconds.
If you didn't really see any nagging issues then I can rest easy. There aren't many 56k'ers in the world as there used to be but I would like for it to load as fast as it as able ;)
