I have a single value node reference field that worked fine with CCK2 but now with CCK3 (6.x-3.0-alpha3) the buttons are gone completely and the preview works only if the field is not in a multigroup.

I upgraded to CCK3 to precisely to have the Node Relationships preview and buttons in a multigroup (after a lot of research and) after I read #5 in #855196: Flexifield intergration said "NR is fully compatible with Multigroup, which is included in CCK".

Correction. The buttons are there. I found that the settings at (/admin/content/node-type/CONTENTTYPE/relationships/noderef) were unset for some reason -- setting them helped.

So it's only the preview that does not work when the (single) field is in CCK3 multigroup.
