I understand there are some licensing issues with Twitter Bootstrap being distributed via Drupal.org, but I'd really like to use Bootstrap for a new project. Any thoughts on the best way to go about this?

Having never used twitter
Having never used twitter bootstrap and having just glanced at it's information my first though is you would be better off using one of Drupal's starter themes. Fusion, Adaptive, Omega and Zen are all Drupal 7 starter themes. Instead of trying to adapt a tool to Drupal, you get a well supported bases theme that already works with Drupal. What you choose depends a bit on what you want from the theme and how you work since there are differences on how they do things.
Some are grid bases, some have built in support for mobile.
You're probably right. I'm
You're probably right. I'm pretty familiar with Zen, but liked the idea of Bootstrap's stylish defaults instead of just having a blank slate. Even more, I was looking forward to using the JS libraries that come with Bootstrap. I presume I can use the same JS libraries with Zen, although that's not something I have much experience doing.
At least some are jQuery
At least some are jQuery based so they should work. Some of the functionality is also available in Drupal modules.
came around bootstrap and
came around bootstrap and googled immediately if it's available for drupal... cool, you guys had the same thoughts. Looks really nice. Maybe one should do something. Saw there's already a WP theme out there.
I like the idea

I'm thinking the same things
I can see how Bootstrap might be useful...
