For example:

1) could the person setting up an Organic Group start a fund raiser? OR
2) Can I let a user create a custom Paypal donate button for himself, and specify a funding target. OR
3) Can I let a user create an ECommerce product? So selling it, would be like accepting donations... etc.

Relevant modules I should check out, other suggestions... Thanx.

Try the Chipin module which helps you use the chipin widget service at www.chipin.com. Chipin ties up nicely with Paypal, so this probably the easiest way to get started.

the task at hand is to actually create a ChipIn style functionality... We cannot use ChipIn for a number of reasons including their rates... Appreciated your suggestion though.

Any other suggestions?

My research shows that the CiviContribute component in CiviCRM comes pretty close to the feature set I'd like to offer to users, but the problem is I want to allow each user to have her/his own fundraiser, e.g. CiviContribute page

Any thoughts on this?

It's been a while since I looked at CiviContribute, but it should definitely be possible. I might be wrong, but think it is just a question of creating a role, assigning your user to that role and enabling the permission for civicontribute for that role.
