Line breaks in mail message not showing

while mail templates look fine, with all desired line breaks displaying correctly in the template layout, the resulting actual mail message is a terrible single-line-wrapped mess, lacking any line breaks or layout.
using html tags or a text editor like TinyMCE makes things worse: the html tags simply display in the end message as tags and have no effect.
what is the trick to force proper line breaks in the actual message?

I've noticed the same thing. I also notice that no one has responded to your question - have you figured out a fix on your own?
