The canonical name tag is stripping off the trailing slash from the value in the page source on the front page... my SEO friends tell me that this is bad... how can this be fixed?

For clarification, 6.x-1.x-dev will automatically assign the current path to the canonical tag if that it is set to be outputted. we're also doing what we can to get the next stable release out ASAP, which will include this fix and many more.
