-Create a new story
--Without the checkbox "path auto"
--With a title different than the manual url
-Once in it, edit it
-Check the path auto and save
-Edit again to see if there is a redirect URL : answer : no.

I have the same issue with both version 7.x-1.4 and 7.x-1.x-dev. Redirect module is also enabled, but I don't think it has anything to do with this behaviour.

I'm checking the HTTP status code with this tool:
http://www.seoconsultants.com/tools/headers

It returns "HTTP/1.1 200 OK" for all the URLs.
