This is part of the Community/Support/Getting-involved Landing pages initiative.
Problem/Motivation
Currently Community & support are combined in the same landing page. This causes confusion and leads people in need in the wrong direction. It also buries the "getting involved" section and call to action. The community is not visible, meaning, people cannot be seen, and how can you see what is going on now, and what is relevant to you.
Proposed resolution
Divide the Community & Support into 3 new sections: Community, Getting involved and Support.
Remaining tasks
Agree on the top-level landing pages and their contents
Community - #1288470: Create 'Community' Section
Support - #1242094: Restore "Support" in header navigation
(Get involved to come)

laura s commentedCross-posting and redistilling this comment from http://groups.drupal.org/node/174999#comment-591889 at @heather's request.
Here's how I read the proposed landing pages:
I hate to come in as a naysayer, but to me this breakdown does not reflect the kinds of questions users ask. They're ambiguous bucket labels that tell me virtually nothing about what's behind them, and you could almost swap the top levels around and any could contain any of the other's content.
One thing I note is that Community, Getting Involved and Support are all riddled throughout the Drupal community. Trying to use them as distinct primary navigation items seems odd to me.
But maybe this comment is more re the d.o primary nav. As such, I would humbly propose consideration of structuring the primary nav UX logic more in terms of action items:
Anyway, my apologies for not sticking just to the topic of the issue, but the tickets in the Roadmap at https://drupal.org/node/1289748 are all rather narrow and assume the primary nav logic:
In general, all of these assume the status quo of the rest of the nav, and I feel the nav should be considered as a whole, not one at a time like legs on a table.
I know I'm late to this party. If there's a better ticket to post this, please let me know.

heather commented1) Re: meaningless words, and status quo. We can rename the navigation links, of course. Those issue titles can be changed. I like the action items very very much!
- "Get help"
- "Find documentation"
- "Contribute" (also used in other OSS communities, and it applies here).
2) Re: narrow. We are just starting now to get in the related issues. We're trying to break down the tasks into issues.
3) Re: Much work to be done. Yeah, we wanted to start on landing pages you know? But in order to build the landing pages, so much needs to be in place. It's a beast of a task, but certainly do-able.

mgiffordSo we have Community & Support, but no Get Involved...
We'd need to build up:
Seems like a worthy challenge for someone.
Can we get a 2014 list of Google Analytics and the most-clicked primary nav items to compare?
Happy to talk more about ideas in #4 & #5 but this tread died in 2011. We can close it if we want or choose which path we want.
Could even postpone it based on the study that the DA is looking at building.
EDIT: I like this Get Involved type of page http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/contribute/

tvn commentedI am going to close this issue since Community and Support are separate menu items now, the rest of the concerns will be addressed as we roll out content strategy recommendations: #2481515: [META] Structure Drupal.org content around areas of user activity, #1414988: [Meta/Plan] Create a new Getting Involved Guide section. All top level pages will be redesigned in the process and menu items will likely slightly change as well.
