Problem/Motivation
We would like to find out what is keeping potential contributors from becoming contributors to the Drupal project, and what the Drupal community means to them. Our knowledge of the problems is based on what we read in issue queues or in conversations, but this knowledge has never been pooled together.
Proposed resolution
Survey and interview potential contributors, to understand context and some motivation. We will have an online version of the survey, as well as conduct interviews at Drupalcamps. We should aim to have a handful of volunteers doing interviews at camps around the world.
After agree on the survey questions we will:
- Conduct the survey
- Collate and communicate the responses.
- Use this data to inform design decisions on the Community/Support/Getting-involved Landing pages initiative
Finalized survey questions
“About you”
- Your role?
- Experience with Drupal?
- Knowledge of Drupal?
- Is Drupal hobby or source of income?
Main Survey:
- What are your expectations from getting involved in the community?
- What are your motivations to get involved?
- What do you expect to get from the getting involved process?
- What are the roadblocks to getting involved?
- If you want to get involved, what can improve this experience for you?
- In what areas you would you like to contribute to Drupal community?
- (If you have been contributing) What is that keeps you involved in this process?
- (If you have been contributing) Do you ever to to the Get Involved page?)
- (If you have been contributing) When you started to get involved, what could have been helpful to you?
- What does a "community leader" mean to you? Can you give me some examples?
- What do you think of the existing community structure?
- What areas of the Drupal community do you think need the most contributions?
- Is there anything else that you would like to share?
Note: This is different from the Prairie Initiative survey, which is focusing on existing contributors https://www.survs.com/survey/HKYGG19OSV, although we’ll also use that feedback.

lisarex CreditAttribution: lisarex commented@dcmistry, cool! Question though: 'Drupal' as a concept is pretty broad... are you talking about the core, the DA, the community? I guess it's wise not to narrow it to d.o. (but that's where we really want to focus the changes).... could just say "...what are the things that can improve this experience for you?"

lisarex CreditAttribution: lisarex commentedremoved 'hours' question. We won't get any useful info from that one, everyone's free time varies wildly from week to week!

lisarex CreditAttribution: lisarex commentedI want to tweet the survey from the rooftops now because I didn't get a lot of responses in person; people were so busy at camp. It's in Google Docs as a form, split into three sections: stuff about the respondents and a question that will send them to a different page depending on the response ( are you currently a contributor?), then a third page that goes into that more depth for everybody.
Sound good? The results can easily be shared (no identifying information is collected).
