"200+ items remaining in IE", overall rather messy rendering, collision with Taxonomy_DHTML

I'm using Drupal 5.1 and DHTML_Menus 5.x-0.7.

Strange thing: when I collapse or expand my DHTML menu block in IE 6, it takes a long time to render the screen. At the bottom of my browser, it says: "200 (something) items remaining", and as far as I can make out, it's "square.gif" which is causing the problem. It is being reloaded all the time when I collapse OR expand my DHTML_menu block. This square.gif belongs to the taxonomy_dhtml module, which, somehow, seems to interfere.
This 200+ items thing does not happen in Firefox or Netscape.

Another thing. The un-expanded menu looks OK, but when I expand it, something gets messy with the graphics. The "square.gif" kind of imposes itself on the first character of the labels of the 2nd and 3rd level items, which leaves only very limited space free for the item labels themselves, in my case less than 30 % of the available column width.

Luckily, these problems disappear when I uninstall Taxonomy_DHTML. Now, I don't know which is the culprit, DHTML_Menu or Taxonomy_DHTML. Using both together does not seem to be possible, at least not in IE (which also seems to be crashing because of this collision - it stopped crashing at least when I got rid of Taxonomy_DHTML). So, for me personally, the thing is solved, but in rather clumsy and messy way. I think checking with Taxonomy_DHTML would make sense.
