The roadmap provides an overview of where Media and its dependencies are headed and how they will get there.
Media 7.x-2.x
- Improve the media browser
- #1224766: Remove default media browser and replace with a default view
- #1289872: Use ctools plugins to provide add-ons to the media browser
- Figure out a way to make the browser core simpler and more re-usable. Investigate existing solutions like CTools modal.
- Keep abstracting re-usable file entity code from media to file_entity.
- Follow established patterns for view modes:
#1291428: Add a 'full' view mode and use it for file/%file pages
#1051090: Revamp file view modes: migrate media_small to teaser, media_large to full, media_preview to preview; deprecate link & original
#1291518: Use Field Formatters for Embedding Options - Accessibility
- Ensuring alt tags are always output for images and can be edited by users (at least for image fields)
- Usability
- Run usability tests on the media browser and configuring file types/display to make this process easier for end users.
File entity 7.x-2.x
- #1227706: Add a file entity access API
- Switch from using automatic file bundle assignment based on the mime type to administrator-defined and UI-changeable file bundle 'groupings' of mime types. Ship with sensible file bundle defaults like Audio, Image, Video, and Document.
#1260050: Provide administrative UI for adding/removing file types
#1292382: Make it possible to create any number of custom File Types
Core issues
- Work on improving the underlying APIs for file and media handling in core.
- #1292470: Convert user pictures to Image Field
- #376287: Make files fieldable
Move most if not all of file_entity, providing support for fieldable files natively in core. - #1174892: File field formatters for rich media display with <video> and <audio> HTML5 elements.
Deprecate core's image field and enforce file field as the definitive file reference field.#1291262: Add 'alt' and 'title' tokenized text options for image formatters, and a 'title' option for the generic file formatter
Remove the 'additional' meta data attached to image and file fields and use proper formatter options instead.
