Fields content lost

I have one content type 'Contact' with several text fields and one node reference field. The node reference is configured as multi field and auto complete. CNR configured to reference the Contact node ref field to other Contact node ref fields. When I create a node of this type, the content of all fields, except the node title, gets lost. When the node is edited the field contents is saved as usual. When CNR is unchecked or disabled the field content is preserved when the node is created.
